Most of us have looked in our musty dusty scrapbooks and winced at the hairstyles we sported in our youth. Or our clothing styles, make-up styles, prom dates (well, almost any dates come to think of it), and behaviors. “What were we thinking?†we ask ourselves.
Truth be known, at the time, those styles were trendy and socially on cue no matter how bad they look now. As to our behaviors and dating picks, well, we were young and learning our way in life. (I’ll come up with some other excuses for present day faux pas…just give me a moment!)
Last night, on our local KARE 11 ten o’clock news, the anchors showed pictures of themselves in their teens.
Belinda Jensen’s photo showed her in full-on pink puffery. On her way to the prom, she looked lovely albeit a bit swallowed by her dress of choice. During the broadcast it came out that she and her date went to the Afton House for their prom dinner. Belinda ordered ribs. I’m not sure why exactly, but it had the other anchors roaring with laughter. Me too.
I know I would not have survived tucking into a rack of ribs while wearing a pink frothy dress without bearing the stains of innocent indulgence. Belinda said her date actually bought her a wrist corsage so she could accommodate a rib-bib without crushing a more traditional corsage! I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks.
As my giggles went unabated, my husband stared at me with an eyebrow raised. He didn’t understand what was sooooo funny. Maybe he was a class act throughout the awkward teen years, but I was so on Belinda’s page. Just thinking about my foibles then and now kept the laughs coming. It was either that or cry. Belinda’s story? The best part of my day.
