Sometimes, now that I’m in midlife, I feel as though it takes a lot more effort to get my playful mojo going. It’s as though words like “matronly†and “sturdy†have run amok with my self-esteem. Nothing looks good on me, my hair is misbehaving—but not in a good way—and even my eyebrow sprouted a grey hair. Not both eyebrows. Just one eyebrow, with one grey hair. Yeah.  Feeling great about myself.
But things changed for the better when my new shoes arrived. I had spotted them in the Hotter catalog and fell in love. They have a retro style…sort of like a woman with a veiled face walking into a 1940’s detective’s office would wear… and they are oh so comfortable.
I wore my new shoes to church last Sunday and immediately started getting whispered compliments on those babies. Women are like that. We can worship and acknowledge.
Then I went grocery shopping. As I wandered down an aisle a young man—one who was wearing sweats and looked like he had just left the couch to grab some snacks– walked past and muttered, “Those are great shoes.†He kept going, never making eye contact. I was happy.
My husband said he would pick me up after he finished an errand, and as I waited by the store’s door I continued to get compliments on those shoes. One gentleman said, “Great shoes.†Then he looked me up and down. “Well actually, the whole package is pretty fine.†I laughed.
Sturdy? Matronly? Pffft.
How about you? What item has the power to change your attitude in a good way?
