I’ll share a quick story about a woman who is thirty years old. She recently told me she has yet to have a good experience with a doctor in her adult life. Like me, she has had a long history of irregular periods. I’ve suggested she have a hormone panel taken to see if there is any obvious cause. She did that and the doctor refused to give her the actual test results. All she was told was the test numbers were within normal ranges. This young woman is pretty feisty and direct in most areas of her life, so I’m not sure why she let it go.
At her last physical she once again told the doctor—another doctor–about her irregular periods. Without taking any blood, saliva, or other tests he said, “Oh, you have polycystic ovaries and need to go on birth control pills.†When she said she had no intention of going on birth control pills he said, “It’s your choice of course, but you’ll probably have a difficult time conceiving, if you conceive at all, and then will likely get cancer.†He handed her the prescription for birth control pills and left. She tore it up. It infuriated both of us that he said this without running one test on her, or looking for any other cause…for example, did she have cysts in her ovaries? Let me say this again…you need to trust your practitioner!
Tell me how you feel about your practitioner. Â Does he or she listen? Â Why do you chose to be seen by this person?
