There is something very sweet and comforting about rituals between lovers. I’m not sure if it is generational thing, but my husband always walks around to my side of the car and opens the door for me, helps me with my coat, and calls at noon just to say he’s thinking about me. I hope I return his thoughtfulness in full measure.
I love to people watch when I’m in a mall or airport. Often I see younger couples walking six feet apart, one ahead of the other, perhaps talking on cell phones. I wonder where the connection is, and how they find their intimacy. Sometimes older couples seem distant too, but not as often. I want to believe there is a richness that accumulates over the years. The idividual faults and weaknesses mellow into endearing character builders. The little acts of love compound into something binding and precious. I know I’m lucky. My husband makes me feel valued and loveable. I think he is the best man on earth, and maybe a few planets beyond that. And it started because he always walks around the car to open my door.
