Barb Dryer
What pure pleasure it is to meet women who understand abundant life is created by individual desires and attitudes. One such woman is Barb Dryer.
Barb exudes a sparkling energy, one of possibilities, kindness, and gratitude, and it’s hard not to feel uplifted in her presence. This past weekend I had the chance to chat with her while attending the Northern Hollow Art Fest in Grasston, MN.
Me: What would you like others to know about you?
Barb: Oh gosh. I think it’s important to be aware of life’s key moments and respond by moving in the direction you are called.
Me: I agree! But how did you know when those “turning point” moments arrived?
Barb: Often it was during a time of turmoil. For instance, some years ago I was an art teacher at a local school. I enjoyed the work even though it was challenging. One day, due to licensure, policy changes, and other cuts, I was let go. Initially, I was angry. But after stewing for about two weeks I realized I was being hit in the head with a huge opportunity. I had always wanted to have flexibility in my life, and time to focus on my pottery and other artistic interests. Tada! Circumstances handed me what I had been asking for.
Me: That is such an important lesson! To be open to receiving what we desire in our hearts.
Barb: Yes. At first, my husband was concerned because our health insurance was gone when I lost my job. He is also self-employed. But you know what? It was just another one of those excuses to not follow the dream. We self-insured and never looked back.
Creating her life
Me: How are things now?
Barb: We’re not rich, but comfortable and happy. I do what I love. Some osteoarthritis has caused me to cut my pottery production in half, but that’s okay! Now I have time to pursue other artistic interests. My husband and I are able to travel, not a lot, but as we please. In fact, we just returned from our annual salmon fishing trip on Lake Michigan.
At this stage of life, I’m clear on what I want, and that’s what I do.
