He felt now that he was not simply close to her, but that he did not know where he ended and she began. ~Leo Tolstoy
How do you leave a note of love? Ever since I began dating the man who is now my husband, we have left little notes of love for each other. Sometimes we leave a trail of notes that end at something even more special, like a gift or a promise of intimacy. It’s the best of midlife music, or at least the soundtrack of a good love story.
Back in the day, when we were in the bloom of getting to know each other, I told him that I saw no reason we couldn’t remain romantic lovers throughout our lives. Why should the effort to surprise and please be replaced with routine? He agreed. In the years since we have stayed true to our need for touch and tenderness.
A few days ago I put a note that said, “I love you†in his vitamins and later found a note of love near my lipstick. Some mornings I find our bathroom mirror slathered in soap with a message of adoration. My husband loves it when my message is nothing more than the imprint of my lips in red lipstick on paper, his glasses, or even his vehicle’s rearview mirror. We’ve placed our messages in subtle spots and in places with more of a loud declaration…like across the garage door.
It got me to wondering what other lover’s do. And so I will ask—where do you put love notes? And if not love notes, what do you do to show your special someone he or she is the one?
Spreading love? The best part of my day.
