I’ve been trying to decide which is worse—an older woman feeling guilty for wearing thong underwear because she likes them and feels a bit naughty, or an older woman wearing full coverage “granny-pants” because she feels it is safe and age appropriate. Janet Evanovich’s latest Stephanie Plum novel finds Stephanie wearing granny-style underwear to ward off sexual desire. What does that say about women and cultural expectations? What does that say about dressing to please, or displease, others? For the record, I love Stephanie Plum books and own every single one. But Janet does shine a spotlight on some of our cultural biases through her humorous plot lines.
My view, not that anyone has asked, is that women who feel comfortable in their skin tend to feel comfortable in their clothes. It’s all about personal choice and confidence. If doing a catwalk strut in full coverage underwear makes a woman purr, she should own it. If wearing a string thong and two pasties is the secret weapon to confidence, then go for it. No underwear? No problem. Why the labels and the judgments? Are women harder on women? (For instance, do we feel embarrassed to be in a locker room with other women because of our underwear choices? Why?) When is the mystical line crossed between sexy and inappropriate? How would you feel if a 90 year old woman took her clothes off and was wearing a red lace bra and matching thong? Yea or nay? Is it age related, or personal preference? Let me know what you think.

I can’t respond to your locker room question (because I would be the one grunting myself into gym clothes in the bathroom stall)…
I don’t think age should define how appropriate something is; each person should.
If I caught a glimpse of an elderly woman in victoria secret apparel, I’d probably wish for that kind of spunk when I get to that age.

Ha! Why would you be hiding in the bathroom stall? Didn’t your mother support your beauty and tell you to be proud of who you are? I do like your comment about the spunky attitude. May we all be so lucky.
