Wahoo! Date night! And what says date night better than watching a couple of lovers (one wife + one hired hand) bump off a husband? In black and white and maybe fifty shades of grey no less.  I know, right?
My husband, who, whom?, I do not want to bump off, suggested we go to the Heights Theater (http://www.heightstheater.com) to see one of their film noir offerings. Besides being a totally cool refurbished theater, the powers that be are running a series of old black and white films under the title of “Death wore lipstick: Women of film noir.†Love that. I mean I’ve had a killer shade or two in my day, but I haven’t misbehaved that badly. Darn it. Envision dangerous women painting their pout red, and then doing very, very, bad things.
We went to see The Postman Always Rings Twice, with Lana Turner. You may be wondering why we’d pay $8 a ticket to see a film that’s from 1946. Well, first of all, it’s a totally different feeling to see it on a big screen, and especially fun when that big screen is in a retro movie house. You feel like you’ve been transported to a bygone era. (Except that almost everyone had a smart phone in hand and was texting or ???)
Secondly, before the film started a Wurlitzer organ rose up from the floor in front of the stage and a guy worked his magic on the keyboards. Talk about multi-tasking! The ever-growing crowd clapped and hummed along to the assortment of movie- theme songs. My husband, happily munching on a bag of buttered popcorn, mentioned the music was worth the price of admission alone. I nodded in agreement.
Just as the lights dimmed for the film I turned around and noted the theater was nearly full. Couples snuggled, smiles and whispers added a layer of intimacy, and expectations grew.
The movie started and all eyes became riveted on a time that was more… innocent? I’m not sure. 1946 spoiler alert: Lana and lover did murder her husband.
I noticed my husband squint his eyes at me a couple of times—could I be that calculating?—and I was tempted to pull out my tube of lipstick, twist the bottom like a knife in the heart, and slowly apply a generous layer of sex and dangerous.
It was a great date night and the best part of my day.
