I was searching for birthday cards for two of my female friends today. There is no shortage of cards that make fun of the aging process, and some people do take offense. It is known as ageism–one of the last safe non-PC areas. I, however, tend not to get upset about the jabs and jokes. I think successful aging comes with a healthy sense of humor, and heaven knows there is plenty to laugh about. For instance I was eyeing my ankles the other day and wondered when they started getting thicker. Then I remembered the word that was created for Hillary Clinton’s lower legs…cankles. (A cross between her calves and ankles because folks couldn’t tell where they started and ended.) I had to chuckle, but haven’t resorted to wearing pantsuits yet.
But that’s me, and sometimes it is hard to know if my friends will enjoy the poke as another year passes. My mom used to say you can laugh or you can cry when life hands you a situation, and she preferred to laugh. Me too. With that in mind, I selected two cards that were humorous, but gentle. Maybe a smile can be just as good as a self-depreciating belly laugh.
